L'église la plus ancienne de Serifos

L’église de Panagia dans l’agglomération de Panagia.

L’église est byzantine et c’est la plus ancienne église de l’île, construite en 950-1000. Il s’agit d’une basilique cruciforme et ses fresques remarquables datent du 14ème et du 17ème siècle.

L’église est aussi appelée Xylopanagia à cause d’une coutume qui avait lieu pendant sa fête qui est organisée tous les Quinze d’Août.

Pendant la révolution de 1821, à laquelle les Serifiens ont participé activement, les cellules ont été utilisées comme refuge pour les réfugiés qui venaient de Péloponnèse et des îles proches de Serifos.
